Still, a Tennessee man who was apparently an intended robbery victim was able to turn the tables on his alleged attackers and shoot both of them in self-defense.
Memphis police report responding to a shooting behind the Classic Inn Friday around 6:15 a.m. Officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and a woman injured in her upper arm.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition, while the female is expected to recover.
The ensuing investigation revealed a startling twist in the violent saga.
The man who fired the shots told detectives that he had gone to the hotel for undisclosed reasons to meet the woman earlier in the morning. She was wrapped in a blanket when he arrived and asked if he was armed.
The intended victim told her he was not, and she had him follow her to the back of the building to her car. But that’s when the encounter took a dangerous turn.
When they reached the vehicle, the woman brandished a weapon and demanded that he hand over any valuables. A man, also armed, suddenly appeared and issued threats, forcing the victim to toss his wallet onto the ground.
He later recounted that a surprising noise in the distance distracted his two alleged assailants. That’s when he grabbed the woman’s gun, prompting the other man to fire an errant shot at him.
The victim returned fire, critically wounding the man and striking the woman. Interestingly, he was also detained along with the two alleged attackers, though no charges were immediately announced.
While his reasons for meeting the woman at the hotel are unknown, it is safe to bet that he should be armed if he habitually has such encounters. He is fortunate to be alive.
