Anti-gunners engage in some outlandish schemes, but few are more ludicrous than their periodic firearm buyback programs.

Announcements go out in the community, and a couple of people strapped for cash turn in a spare weapon or two for money. Then officials crow about taking guns off the streets and saving lives.

This wrong-headed strategy has now crossed the nation’s southern border and taken hold in Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum last week chose style over substance to solve her nation’s out-of-control violent crime problem. She announced a gun buyback program titled “Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace.”

Sheinbaum promised residents uncertain about possible consequences that there would be no prosecutions if weapons were given up.

“It’s about setting up places like the lobbies of churches where people can go to turn in their weapons voluntarily and give them economic incentives to give up their firearms,” she declared. It is unclear whether the weapons will be checked for possible use in criminal activities.

People may anonymously leave their unwanted firearms at a multitude of locations for a substantial amount of cash.

Do you have an extra revolver and need a quick influx of funds? The state will pay the equivalent of $430 for your weapon.

The going rate explodes to $1,200 for an AK-47 and a cool $1,300 for a machine gun. State officials promise to destroy all weapons collected in the buyback program, even those which could be used to protect the people from organized crime.

Mexico already has highly restrictive gun control, and regular citizens face virtually impossible hurdles to cross to own a firearm legally. Despite this, the nation recorded over 31,000 homicides in 2023.

And it is certain that the drug cartels that control large swaths of the nation will not be lined up to hand over their weapons.
