Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), certainly no stranger to Second Amendment advocates, stirred the pot again last week. This time, it was her signature on a controversial package that included $1,000,000 for school students to report perceived violations of gun laws to government officials.
The funding establishes a “tipline” for children to turn in their parents or other adults for what may be improperly stored firearms.
It doesn’t take much of a conspiracy theorist to plainly see where this slippery slope leads.
For her part, Whitmer lauded the overall package as enhancing safety and promoting literacy in Michigan schools. “From investing $125 million more in our students and schools to implementing proven science of reading strategies that will improve literacy, I’m committed to making a real difference in people’s lives. That’s why I’m proud to sign these three bills into law, giving our schools, students and teachers the flexibility they need.”
No one argues with the goal of increasing student literacy, but the new tipline quickly became a hot-button issue among Michigan residents. Establishing an apparatus for young people to report their elders to state officials is not a good look — no matter the intention.
It also sets a perilous precedent. At what point does the next cause warrant having children operate as spies against their families to report alleged transgressions to the state?
No one advocates for safe storage more strongly than Second Amendment supporters. It is the responsibility of every gun owner to secure their weapons away from those who could bring harm to themselves or others, particularly the young.
However, having students report their parents or other adults to the state for what may or may not be illegal actions is a giant leap from educating them on safe storage. This is a dangerous action with easily foreseeable consequences.
