North Carolina deputies raced to a disturbance call in the early morning hours of Sunday, and as is often the case, what was going to happen had already happened by the time they arrived.
If the facts hold as the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has them, a local woman has every reason to be thankful that she was armed and had the presence of mind to act instead of becoming just another statistic.
Resident called 911 and waited on their arrival
Investigators believe Tony Lee Creekmore of Roanoke Rapids appeared at the residence at around 4 a.m. He was already in the court system facing multiple child abuse charges.
His connection to the occupant is unknown, but he allegedly started banging on the door.
As the frightened woman called 911 and deputies were dispatched, the emergency call took a dramatic turn. Major Anzell Harris said that the unidentified caller fired on Creekmore, and officers found that he had passed away from his wounds by the time they arrived.
A man already facing child abuse charges allegedly attempted to force his way into a home and paid the ultimate price.
No charges have been filed against the armed defender
Authorities continue to investigate and have not announced charges against the female homeowner. It would take startling new information to place her in any role other than a brave individual who stood her ground.
The sequence of events is important to unravel here.
As the suspect reportedly tried to enter the residence, the woman inside called emergency services and waited for them to arrive. But deputies were minutes away, and Creekmore managed to get through the door.
At this point, what is going to go down will be done by the time the cavalry rolls up. The only question remaining is what that will be.
The woman who was apparently his target was not afforded the luxury of time to wait for the good guys with guns to appear. But she had a ready firearm and was courageous enough to be her own first responder when the confrontation spiraled out of control.
That may well have saved her life.
