To hear anti-gun forces tell it, firearms only cause destruction and mayhem. They are never called upon when a violent criminal threatens an innocent person’s life and there is no other recourse.

The truth is vastly different from this misinformation, and yet another incident on Saturday offered further proof of the deterrent effect guns have on crime.

This time, a 33-year-old Nevada man faced the decision of his life when he was confronted just before 4:00 a.m. in Henderson. An alleged armed robber attempted to accost the civilian, demanding that he hand over his wallet and cell phone.

The intended victim had other ideas.

Knowing that his life was in danger whether he complied with the verbal commands or not, the man chose instead to draw his weapon and open fire. Several shots rang out in the night, and at least one struck the suspect.

Henderson Police were on the scene quickly, and first responders attempted to render life-saving aid to the suspect. Their efforts were futile, however, and he passed away.

The man who defended himself remained at the location and cooperated with law enforcement. He was not injured.

The identity of the deceased was initially withheld pending notification of his family.

The loss of life is tragic but easily avoidable. The suspect made the wrong determination and paid the ultimate price, and the decision reached by the intended victim may have saved his life.

The American people are not content to be helpless in the face of violent crime, and there is a growing body of evidence that the good people are arming themselves. Being legally armed is often the best and only defense against the unexpected, and this incident is just the most recent example.

That message must circulate through the lawless community, as it will undoubtedly save lives.
