Last week’s U.S. presidential election is in the history books, and for Second Amendment advocates, few issues were at the forefront of the campaign platforms.
However, President-Elect Donald Trump (R) over the weekend declared that he stands behind a program of national concealed carry reciprocity that would greatly upset anti-gun forces. Such a move would mean a person with a concealed carry permit in one state could exercise this right in every other state.
This freedom would be established in states with differing or no licensing requirements.
This overdue change was attempted in the 117th Congress during the early years of the last administration. However, the proposal died in committee.
But with the incoming administration seemingly in firm control of both houses of Congress and the Executive Branch, it has a much better chance of being enshrined into law.
This is a natural offshoot of the Supreme Court’s monumental 2022 Bruen decision, which reaffirmed the right to carry a weapon for self-defense outside of the home.
The weekend announcement came through Don Trump Jr.’s Instagram account, where he posted: “Boom! My father just announced concealed carry reciprocity. The Second Amendment will stay and remain protected.”
The elder Trump was already on record supporting reciprocity for every state. He wrote in a policy paper, “If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.”
A potential side effect of this proposed change could be gun license “tourism,” or traveling to states with less restrictive statutes governing the receipt of a concealed carry license. Carry Texas notes that this could be accomplished in as little as a weekend, which could be a boon for instructors in pro-Second Amendment states.
