Never mind violent criminals plaguing major cities, New Jersey officials are content with targeting firearms dealers for “illegal” ammunition transactions, a practice that clearly falls under Second Amendment protections.

Unfortunately for gun-owning residents of the Garden State, they live in one of seven that mandates a background check simply for purchasing ammo.

Now, two New Jersey retailers are in legal trouble for the egregious act of allegedly selling ammo without verifying with the government that the purchaser is eligible to make the transaction under state law. The Attorney General’s office held a press conference last week announcing lawsuits against Butch’s Gun World in Vineland and Point Blank Guns and Ammo in East Hanover.

The announcement was posted on YouTube — with comments turned off.

AG Matthew Platkin (D) repeated the mantra that the background check requirement was part of addressing the state’s “public health crisis.”

Platkin charged both establishments sold thousands of rounds without asking for permits or ID. This violated what state officials deem “reasonable controls” on Second Amendment-protected activities.

He claimed ammunition sales could lead to mass shootings and other threats to public safety while declaring that the businesses treated selling ammunition “like they were selling a loaf of bread.”

The controversial Gun Industry Public Safety Act, passed in 2022, established the background check requirement. Law-abiding gun owners immediately recognized it as just another state protocol to harass good citizens without making an ounce of difference in actual crime.

This act led to the newly created Statewide Affirmative Firearms Enforcement Office, which apparently has nothing better to do than to hassle gun retailers. Criminals do not walk into these establishments and show their IDs, and they are not deterred one iota by yet another foolish layer of laws intended to stifle Second Amendment activities.
