Despite the Second Amendment and clear Supreme Court rulings, anti-gun lawmakers across the nation continue to target the right to keep and bear arms. The latest attempted infringement emerged last week in New Mexico.
Lawmakers revived embattled Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s (D) 2023 push to ban semi-automatic weapons. Her initial overreach was trampled under a stampede of protest that included members of her own party, but that effort is now back.
Senate Bill 279 is modeled after Sen. Mark Kelly’s (D-AZ) Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act.
The GOSAFE Act crashed and burned on the federal level. It sought to enact a sweeping ban on a class of weapons based on the gas operation of certain semi-automatic firearms.
New Mexico lawmakers hope to dodge an explosion of controversy through this backdoor targeting of the AR-15 and similar weapons. By using technical language and avoiding direct mention of these popular sporting rifles, there is a mistaken belief that the public will not be aware that their Second Amendment rights are under attack.
Not likely.
Santa Fe lawmakers quickly lined up to express their support or opposition to the proposal.
State Rep. Andrea Romero (D) smeared these popular firearms as “assault weapons” and “weapons of war.” She claimed supporters of SB 279 are targeting the way firearms are manufactured and specific magazine sizes.
“We’re actually focusing on the engineering inside the weapon,” Romero declared. “That’s what’s really different about this.”
State Sen. Crystal Brantley (R) brushed off arguments for more gun control.
“It would actually be the most wide, sweeping, overreaching legislative proposal that we’ve seen nationwide,” Brantley charged. “It’s not hitting the mark. In fact, this is targeting law-abiding citizens. It’s clearly a violation of our Second Amendment rights, and at the end of the day, it’s not reducing crime in New Mexico.”
She then countered that all legislators agree on the need to take a tougher stance on crime and target criminals.
