A New Mexico legislator sounded the alarm last week over renewed attempts by anti-gun forces to make criminals out of law-abiding citizens.
State Rep. Stefani Lord (R) blasted the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion Act, or SB 279. This controversial measure would ban the import, sale, and possession of popular sporting rifles as well as standard-capacity magazines.
The proposal targets the overwhelming majority of semi-automatic firearms which use spent gas to reset the bolt for the next shot. Going after the mechanics of these legal weapons is a more recent tactic of lawmakers who seek to wipe them out of existence.
Lord accused her colleagues of attempting to eradicate the Second Amendment while claiming to support public safety.
The representative declared “the ambiguous wording of the bill risks turning law-abiding gun owners into felons overnight.” Lord added that such laws are about control and not safety.
Lord previously drew the ire of anti-Second Amendment forces when she held an auction of a handgun and rifle at a campaign event last April.
After critics predictably blasted her fundraising drive, Lord responded by noting that every campaign she ran before featured a similar event.
“It brings in a tremendous amount of money, and the people like it,” the representative said last year. “I haven’t had any complaints in the East Mountains, so I will continue doing that every year until I hear otherwise.”
The opposition tried to score points by equating lawful gun ownership with the despicable acts of violent criminals, but Lord’s constituency clearly did not buy that argument.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), who faced numerous critics recently over anti-gun initiatives, told Fox News Digital that SB 279 is a “responsible” action for the good of the people.
“It simply regulates the most dangerous firearms and accessories that are disproportionately used in mass shootings,” Grisham claimed.
The embattled governor unleashed a firestorm of criticism in September 2023 when she inexplicably attempted to ban the public carry of firearms due to a so-called “public health emergency.”
Even members of her own party rebelled against this blatant overreach, and law enforcement officials vowed not to enforce the draconian measure.
Grisham was forced to retract her ill-conceived ban and drop—at least for a time—her work to strip gun rights from New Mexicans.
The governor then faced an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to impeach her over the phony “crisis.” Lord and Rep. John Block (R) led this effort.
Block blasted the latest attempted infringement on gun rights as “wrapped in vague language that hands unelected officials way too much power to decide which guns get outlawed.”
Many opponents of yet more gun control argue that the most recent bill attempts to use technical language to prohibit the AR-15 and similar popular sporting rifles without actually naming them.
Last week, the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) posted a fascinating video of Second Amendment rights advocate and organization leader Matthew Mammoser.
He hauled several large boxes filled with thousands of petitions signed by concerned citizens to Santa Fe. The people are not sitting idly by while their freedoms are trampled on by state officials who choose to ignore the Constitution.
New Mexico House Minority Leader Gail Armstrong (R) challenged her colleagues to work with her and find “real solutions” to the plague of violent criminals preying on the innocent.
Armstrong charged that anti-gun zealots are targeting Second Amendment rights “rather than take violent offenders off our streets, address our healthcare shortage and work on the unaffordability crisis our state is facing.”
Whatever the outcome, New Mexico is now positioned along with other radical anti-gun bastions such as California, New York, and Illinois. The Land of Enchantment will undoubtedly be a heated Second Amendment battleground for years to come.
