The Second Amendment Foundation reported a major victory for gun rights in New Orleans and a setback for those who would use trickery to violate the Second Amendment and state law.

City officials met with Attorney General Liz Murrill (R) and then quickly removed the sketchy designation of a police station in the French Quarter as a technical school.

Murrill reported on the meeting with NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and other city officials. She said in a statement that the leaders “are working on a solution that would comply with the law.”

The popular tourist area would have had several blocks designated as a “gun-free” zone due to the presence of the “school,” which allows the restrictions within 1,000 feet. That would have covered several city blocks.

New Orleans officials know that the site is not a technical school, but since police officers receive some training there, they attempted to circumvent state law by sleight of hand.

Louisiana lawmakers recently enacted constitutional carry rights for law-abiding citizens, meaning they do not need the government’s permission to carry for self-defense.

But New Orleans attempted to work around the law with a blatantly dishonest act that designated the Eighth Precinct Station as a school. This would mean that the police facility would fall under the jurisdiction of state education officials, and obviously, that is not the case.

The new Louisiana law was passed earlier this year with much fanfare during a special legislative session on crime. It made the state the 28th in the nation to honor constitutional carry rights.

The statute protecting carry rights goes into effect on August 1.

City leaders objected and found what they believed was a clever way to skirt the state law by relocating some training to the Eighth District. That turned out not to be the case.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
