Another effort to close the doors of the embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is underway even as the new administration prepares to enter the White House.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) introduced H.R. 129 to abolish the agency as her party readies to control the Oval Office and both branches of Congress.
The congresswoman in 2023 spoke on the House floor against the ATF. “There’s been a lot of talk about defunding the ATF, even abolishing the agency altogether, and I’m still here waiting to hear a good reason why the ATF should remain an agency at all.”
Boebert noted the numerous controversies surrounding the ATF and the low regard many Americans have for the agency.
Though this is hardly the first attempt to shutter the ATF, its chances are significantly enhanced by the pending changes in Washington, D.C.
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) publicly called for the agency’s shutdown in November. Speaking to Fox News Digital, the congressman described the ATF as a “disaster” and charged that it had fought against the Second Amendment “for several decades.”
Critics blasted the agency in recent years for what they described as its circumventing of congressional authority by making its own laws.
For example, the ATF made possession of pistol stabilizer braces illegal and established that parts of a firearm constitute a weapon in and of themselves and thus require a criminal background check to be purchased.
Then, of course, there’s the infamous Operation Fast and Furious, the debacle that ran from 2009 to 2011 and allowed illegal firearms to be trafficked into the U.S. The stated goal was to link the weapons to Mexican drug cartels, but many were lost and even linked to murders in the country.
One of these weapons was used to kill Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in 2010.
