The shameful Veteran’s Administration (VA) practice of eradicating Second Amendment rights away from those who served the country and need help with their finances may be about to end.

The agency has a weekly practice of submitting names of those veterans requesting assistance to the FBI’s national background check database—thus denying gun rights to those who deserve them the most.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) on Thursday stood tall and defended veterans from “unelected bureaucrats” who target their firearms. A congressional hearing heard testimony on the practice of nullifying gun rights “from our veterans if they need help managing their assets.”

This vulnerable group for years faced pressure to give up their guns for going through episodes of depression following service or even asking for third-party assistance with financial matters.

Crane, a former Navy Seal, dismissed anti-gunners’ argument that removing guns from possibly troubled veterans reduces the suicide risk.

“When it comes to suicide, a lot of these individuals, a lot of veterans…who are struggling with PTSD and have some of these issues, one of [their] biggest issues is fear and trauma because [they] thought [they] might lose [their] life in battle against other people with guns,” Crane explained.

He noted that stripping their Second Amendment rights away only adds to feeling helpless and defenseless. This, in turn, could fuel suicidal thoughts and actions.

The VA last year imposed a six-month moratorium on taking gun rights away from veterans in need of assistance with managing their benefits. However, that was only temporary, and Crane’s effort would permanently fix what many consider a gross injustice.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle supported the move, and H.R. 496 will garner votes from many lawmakers.

There are multiple reports of veterans hesitating or refusing to request assistance due to fears of losing their Second Amendment rights. Supporters of the new bill believe those who served the nation are being punished simply for needing help managing their finances.
