A North Carolina woman received good news this week when prosecutors determined she shot her ex-boyfriend in self-defense as he attempted to break into her home.

The terrifying incident unfolded for Sadie Floyd of Hubert in the early morning hours of October 7. She already had taken out several domestic violence protective orders against 28-year-old Colton Bush, but officials reported that he ignored these and continued to harass Floyd.

Records show that, before his fateful decision to carry out a home invasion, Bush had already called her 26 times that night and sent dozens of text messages.

He also notified dispatch that his ankle monitor was failing and told his mother that he expected to return to jail. He was ordered to wear the monitor due to charges of selling cocaine and driving under the influence earlier this year.

Authorities believe Bush entered the home through a window after attempting to get in through a door. Floyd was home with her two young children and a friend.

The ensuing confrontation was in the presence of witnesses and caught on camera, and the collective evidence supported Floyd’s version of events.

Armed with a .380 caliber handgun, she ordered the ex-boyfriend to leave, but he refused. It was then that Floyd fired five shots, and each struck her alleged assailant, killing him.

Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee explained that North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine protects a person’s right to use lethal force to defend themselves if they reasonably fear death or serious bodily harm.

Lee described Bush’s death as tragic but legally justified under the circumstances.

The case proves again that restraining orders are ineffective against a person determined to hurt another individual. Floyd was wise to be armed and courageous enough to effectively use her weapon when faced with a deadly threat.
