Second Amendment advocates and outdoor enthusiasts are closely watching the changing of the guard in Washington, D.C., and many are pleased with at least one new face.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) celebrated the elevation of former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) as Secretary of the Interior (SOI) last Thursday. Unlike some other heated confirmations, Burgum sailed through the Senate process on a markedly bipartisan 79-18 vote.

The NRA noted that the new cabinet minister has made a career of staunchly defending the nation’s sporting traditions and gun rights. The organization sent letters of endorsement to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY).

The missive noted how the NRA is at the forefront of hunter safety efforts and preserving the nation’s rich sporting traditions.

These include wise conservation efforts and the utilization of renewable resources. Burgum will now be positioned to protect and preserve wildlife and the natural beauty of sprawling federal lands.

The letter read, “Throughout his career in public service, Gov. Burgum has demonstrated respect for hunting as primary use of public lands and his commitment to protecting and expanding access for hunters and recreational shooting.”

The NRA letter further declared the head of the Department of the Interior has a “unique understanding” of the challenges he faces.

Burgum hails from a rural North Dakota farming community and rose to prominence and public service as a software entrepreneur. He became a two-term governor and briefly had presidential aspirations before dropping out of the race.

In addition to his cabinet position, the former governor will chair a new National Energy Council and serve on the National Security Council.

The Interior Department controls more than half a billion acres of U.S. land as well as giant swaths offshore.
