Even the worthiest legal actions do not pay for themselves, and fighting government overreaches unfortunately requires deep pockets.

As more and more misguided state governments attempt to thumb their noses at the Constitution and Supreme Court on gun rights, it is increasingly necessary to step up and make challenges possible.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) took that mantle this week. On Monday, it announced it provided $100,000 to combat controversial gun control measures in Massachusetts.

The funds went to the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League (GOAL), which spearheads the defense of the Second Amendment in the state.

Late last month, Gov. Maura Healy (D) signed a sweeping law into effect that will chill gun rights for law-abiding citizens.

How onerous is the new legislation?

All firearms in Massachusetts must be registered, including those in retail inventory that have yet to be sold. Standard-capacity magazines that hold more than ten rounds are now illegal, and those already possessed may not be transferred.

State police are now charged with developing a database of banned semi-automatic weapons and all guns.

Massachusetts will move toward new and unreliable technologies such as “microstamping,” which have been clearly shown to be flawed.

Live fire training is now required to obtain a gun permit. This is even though there are very few such facilities in Massachusetts, creating an effective roadblock to licensing.

The NSSF released a statement blasting the law for being drafted behind closed doors, wholly without input from citizens and advocates for the right to keep and bear arms. Organization senior vice president Lawrence G. Keane declared the state rejected its proud historical heritage.

“Massachusetts is known as a birthplace of the American Revolution, but these lawmakers have turned their backs to rights that belong to the people and instead are instituting an Orwellian state over the citizens of the Commonwealth.”

Keane further charged that federal courts will not look kindly on the state’s bowing to special interest groups and shredding the Constitution.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
