U.S. gun sales dove again in March to levels unseen since before the 2020 pandemic, but there is also good news from the latest industry statistics.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reported that firearm-related background checks dropped by approximately 3.8 percent last month. This represented the low-water mark since 2019, but the drop was smaller than February’s 9 percent plunge.
However, March continued the downward pressure on the gun industry so far in 2025. Where did this drop in sales originate?
Experts believe there is far less uncertainty among gun enthusiasts concerning the possibility of severe firearm limitations or outright bans. The previous White House administration went above and beyond to weaponize the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) against gun dealers and owners.
Still, there are much fewer worries that the Donald Trump presidency will take a similar course.
The NSSF noted that March marked the 68th consecutive month of gun sales soaring past the one million mark. In fact, the adjusted tally showed that there were more than 1.3 million federal background checks last month.
In a statement, NSSF spokesman Mark Oliva noted the milestone as a sign of overall health in the weapons industry.
“Over 1.3 million times, Americans freely approached the gun counter to lawfully exercise their Second Amendment freedoms,” Oliva explained. “Economic challenges notwithstanding, this is indicative of the desire of Americans to safely and responsibly keep and bear arms. Americans continue to invest in their freedom and safety because it still remains a high priority.”
With the historic surge in firearm ownership during the pandemic years and the accompanying social unrest, there are millions more gun owners than just a decade ago. Industry experts believe this base of support will keep manufacturers and retailers strong, even if the slowdown continues.
