Outdoor enthusiasts are under attack by opponents who wish to ban traditional lead ammunition and tackle on the dubious grounds that they pose a threat to wildlife and fishing stocks.
This accusation comes without a serious scientific basis, and now there is a pushback against curbing outdoor sports.
Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) introduced H.R. 556, better known as the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act, to confront this growing threat.
The proposal would prevent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) from prohibiting lead ammunition and tackle without the agreement of state gaming officials and a scientific basis for the action.
In a press release, Wittman cited his lifelong passion for hunting and fishing and said he was “appalled” by federal bureaucrats’ efforts to restrict access to these time-honored traditions.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) lauded Wittman’s move as a welcome advancement toward preserving hunting and fishing traditions.
The NSSF charged that these controversial policies lack sound peer review and evidence backing their proponents’ claims. No link is established between declining wildlife and fish populations and the sporting public’s use of traditional ammunition and tackle.
NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane praised Whittman’s proposal as a significant step toward ensuring American outdoor traditions are passed down to future generations.
“This legislation is tremendously important to protect the primary funding for wildlife conservation in America,” Keene explained. “Firearm and ammunition manufacturers have paid over $29 billion, when adjusted for inflation, since 1937, and that has been the leading funding source of wildlife and habitat conservation in America.”
Suppressing hunting and fishing, he charged, would place these expansive conservation efforts at “serious risk.”
It is a sad day when some of the most cherished American traditions are under attack. This legislation is crucial to ensure that these activities are protected and can be passed down to future generations.
