Elections, as many have said, have consequences. Part of the aftermath of the recent presidential race is determining exactly how the selection of former President Donald Trump (R) to return to the Oval Office will affect Second Amendment rights.
For the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the hope is that the ascension of the 47th president will lead to the erasure of the contentious White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
Most gun rights advocates agree that the outgoing administration created the office as part of a sweeping effort to eradicate the right to keep and bear arms.
And while the president-elect did not mention the controversial office on the campaign trail, he assured gun rights supporters that he would stand firmly in their corner and undo transgressions by the previous occupants.
For one leading Second Amendment supporter, Lawrence Keane of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the path to keeping that promise is clear.
“President-elect Trump has the ability to stand strong with law-abiding Second Amendment supporters and wipe away this unprecedented abuse of government authority that has been used as a blunt instrument against rights that are protected by the U.S. Constitution,” Keane declared.
The NSSF senior vice president added that no other part of government forces taxpayers to fund efforts to “denigrate their rights protected by the law.”
The outgoing administration desperately attempted to paint themselves as gun rights advocates on the campaign trail, but the electorate was not fooled. The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and several contentious ATF initiatives showed their true colors in a way that weak denials and camouflage hats could not undo.
Critics charged the office never once addressed the criminal misuse of firearms. Instead, it misappropriated taxpayer funds in a blatant attempt to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
Among its activities were proposals that would suppress Second Amendment rights by members with long track records advocating for disarmament.
In a statement last week, the NSSF proposed that the president-elect replace this office with one dedicated to upholding gun rights for the good people of the nation.
The outgoing administration established the office in September 2023 under the guise of making Americans safer. Vice President Kamala Harris (D) was the “gun control czar” in charge of advancing the White House’s anti-gun goals.
Office Director Stefanie Feldman did not try to hide the administration’s utter contempt for the Second Amendment. Soon-to-be former President Joe Biden (D) once smeared firearm manufacturers as “the enemy,” and the director declared he would target the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), the industry’s liability shield against frivolous lawsuits, for extinction.
“As president, he will defeat them again. And he will repeal the nonsensical liability protection for gun owners,” Feldman claimed.
This, of course, blatantly ignores the fact that the weapons industry is not protected from liability for misdeeds. Rather, the law was enacted two decades ago in response to a wave of frivolous lawsuits from anti-gun state and local governments intent on destroying companies protected by the Constitution.
Part of the egregious record of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention is its support for the recent attempt to eradicate funding for hunter safety programs in public schools.
This initiative drew a swift public backlash, and shocked lawmakers quickly rose in unison to strike it down.
Protecting public safety and finding solutions for violent crime in our cities would be a far better use of taxpayer dollars. The incoming administration should and likely will abandon this frivolous office and turn its attention to preserving the freedom and well-being of law-abiding citizens.
