The good people of Ohio can breathe easier thanks to the legislature and Gov. Mike DeWine (R).
December saw the passage of both SB 58 and SB 148, with the latter being rolled into the former. Each protected gun rights against anti-gun lawmakers who seek to whittle away at the Second Amendment.
First, SB 58 bars any government entity from mandating that individuals purchase firearm liability insurance or pay a fee to state or local leaders to exercise their constitutional rights.
Unable to ban weapons outright, some state and local governments use these tactics to raise financial barriers between citizens and gun ownership.
Then there’s SB 148. This measure prohibited lawmakers from establishing a gun registry or a list of firearm owners. It further banned financial companies from tracking gun purchases through credit card records.
Every Second Amendment advocate knows that a firearm registry is the step just prior to confiscation.
Further, states such as California now require credit card companies to track firearm purchases under the guise of preventing mass shootings. The result is a de facto gun registry, something Ohio residents no longer need to fear.
The Senate vote last month was by an overwhelming 25-6 margin.
Senators heard from the Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) in December as debate raged over the bills. The gun rights advocacy group told lawmakers that “opponents of our Second Amendment rights are an inventive lot, continually seeking ways to get around constitutional protections to prohibit or restrict firearms possession and ownership.”
Therein lies the crux of the gun rights movement.
Short of an outright ban, anti-gunners work day and night to come up with ways to chip away at the Second Amendment until it is meaningless. This requires a robust response, and that comes from upstanding organizations fighting for justice through the legal system.
