Under a proposal before the state legislature, the good people of Ohio would be forced to wait ten long days to complete the retail purchase of a firearm.
This misguided measure is just the latest in a string of attempts by anti-gun forces to erect as many barriers between the American people and legal firearm purchases as possible.
Both of the bill’s sponsors are state lawmakers from Cincinnati, Reps. Cecil Thomas (D) and Rachel Baker (D). Thomas asserted that the mandatory wait to complete a firearm purchase is in the public interest.
“This brief cooling-off period provides individuals with the time to reconsider their purchase,” he claimed, adding his belief that this is true “especially in moments of emotional distress when impulsive decisions can have tragic consequences.”
Currently, Ohio residents do not have to endure a government-mandated waiting period to exercise their Second Amendment rights. They are, of course, required to submit to a criminal background check through licensed dealers.
Hawaii’s two-week waiting period is the longest in the nation. Ohio seeks to join California, Washington and Washington, D.C. in forcing law-abiding citizens to wait ten days to consummate the constitutionally protected transaction.
Baker declared that Ohio lawmakers must balance freedoms granted by the Bill of Rights with public safety.
Both lawmakers cited a 2017 study that purported to show these waiting periods have a significant effect on gun-related deaths. However, non-partisan groups have seriously challenged these findings by questioning researchers’ methodology to reach their conclusions.
And does either representative truly believe that violent criminals will be subject to this waiting period? Of course not.
Instead, they will continue to do what they have always done, which is acquire weapons illegally. Only the law-abiding citizens will be significantly inconvenienced by this arbitrary law.
