While several states shamefully fell to the whims of radical anti-gunners, Ohio stood tall and expanded Second Amendment rights with two strong new laws.

House Bill 452 and Senate Bill 58, signed by Gov. Mike DeWine (R) on January 8, strengthened self-defense capabilities for some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens while protecting lawful gun owners from more government overreach.

The House measure established broad new protections for those who use legal weapons to defend houses of worship and other non-profit establishments from attack.

The new law removed the fear of civil or criminal liability for those who act as the first line of defense. This enhanced the previous statute, which only protected private businesses, local governments, and universities.

Several religious organizations, including Jewish groups, expressed their support for protecting faith-based entities from violent assaults.

The law from the Senate prohibits state or local authorities in Ohio from mandating that gun or knife owners pay fees or possess liability insurance.

While other states are dominated by forces attempting to erect financial obstacles between law-abiding citizens and gun ownership, Ohio took a stand to protect its people’s Second Amendment rights.

Some critics tried to argue that SB 58 was a solution searching for a problem, but actions elsewhere proved the need to preemptively protect gun owners from such encroachments.

The new law goes even further and bans government agencies and private financial firms from tracking firearm purchases. This trend is alarming to defenders of gun rights, who correctly warn that establishing such databases is the first step toward confiscation.

No longer will credit card institutions be permitted to cull information on weapons purchases through merchant codes, which protects the privacy of gun owners.

As extremists in other states build walls between the people and exercising their constitutional rights, it is refreshing to see the commitment Ohio lawmakers have to self-defense and Second Amendment freedoms.
