Most burglars are cowards by nature and will run away at any sign that a residence is occupied. Occasionally they break this pattern, and it can lead to deadly results.

Such was the case at around 2 a.m. Friday at a home in Englewood, Ohio. The resident heard strange noises in his backyard and discovered a trespasser.

The occupants, a boyfriend and girlfriend, reacted quickly. She called 911 and informed the dispatcher that her boyfriend was retrieving a weapon for self-defense.

Three shots rang out while she was still talking to emergency services.

Investigators determined the boyfriend went outside to check on the noises and initially believed the intruder was gone. The now-armed man checked his vehicle for possible damage when he was startled yet again.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Matthew Culham, was still there and allegedly charged the homeowner.

First responders pronounced Culham dead at the scene.

Englewood Police Chief Corey Follick told reporters this was unusual behavior for an attempted break-in.

“Most burglars, if they determine that a home is occupied, once they’re detected, they normally flee the area,” Follick explained. “This subject stayed on their property and confronted the homeowner when he was out double-checking to see what all may have been damaged or stolen from his property or who the person was on his property.”

The police chief added that evidence gathered by investigators supported details provided by the couple at the residence. Officials now await toxicology results to determine if there were contributing factors to the suspect’s unusual behavior.

The Ohio town is relatively peaceful, averaging roughly one homicide per year for the past decade.

But even in such a setting, it is best to be prepared for the unexpected. While violent crime is undoubtedly concentrated in certain areas of the country, the unfortunate reality of 2025 is that no region is immune.
