There are times when there is no choice but to confront a violent criminal, such as a home invasion or a carjacking attempt. Then there’s a situation such as that faced by an Oklahoma family victimized by an apparent serial burglar.

Authorities in Pottawatomie County were aware of numerous break-ins in the McLoud area. On Saturday afternoon, they received a call about yet another burglary, this time involving a firearm and cash.

Sheriff’s Department Lt. Scott Hawkins told reporters that the report of the most recent break-in was hardly a surprise. “We’ve had a string of other burglaries prior to that. So they were in the process of checking out the area.”

Hours after the crime, family members spotted the alleged perpetrator. He was later identified as Cameron Wahpekeche and was reportedly carrying a stolen duffle bag when he was spotted, which helped with his identification.

The family decided to act immediately instead of waiting for the authorities to intervene.

A risky move, to be sure, and Wahpekeche allegedly produced a firearm when the victimized family confronted him. One of his accusers also had a weapon, and shots were exchanged.

Wahpekeche was struck by one bullet, and the wild incident descended into chaos. A physical struggle ensued that led to multiple people, including the suspect, being on the ground.

Investigators believe that Wahpekeche fired more rounds as he struggled, but no one in the family was hit. At some point, he was able to free himself and flee into a nearby brushy area.

Deputies were able to locate and apprehend the suspect, but not before he reportedly attempted to bite one of his captors.

Wahpekeche was treated at an area hospital and then charged with burglary, illegal possession of a firearm and other counts. Investigators discovered he was already a convicted felon with a string of arrests on charges including domestic violence, assault and burglary.
