As multiple states consider sales tax holidays for gun and ammunition purchases, another state proposed a novel approach to enhancing weapon safety.

And it comes from an unusual source.

Oklahoma state Sen. Jo Anna Dossett (D) is the minority whip and not exactly on the front lines of pushing Second Amendment freedoms. However, she advanced an innovative bill to eliminate sales taxes on gun safety devices.

A wide array would be included. Among them are gun safes, trigger locks, cases, lock boxes, and barrel locks.

This sales tax exemption would apply to Oklahoma’s federally licensed firearm dealers, though it is unclear whether the tax break would extend to other dealers.

Dossett noted that the idea is gaining traction in multiple states and wants to garner bipartisan support for the measure in Oklahoma.

“I just think it kind of checks all the boxes on both sides if you will of this argument…It’s very, very difficult to argue with tax relief,” the senator explained. “And I think responsible gun owners [will] make the decision to keep their guns safe and secure, and out of unauthorized users’ hands.”

Dossett argued that these responsible adults deserve a tax break for doing the right thing.

Of course, her proposal aligns precisely with the weapons industry and all responsible gun owners. No one is more vested in keeping weapons secure and out of the wrong hands than good citizens who own firearms, and a tax break to encourage this practice is a welcome sign.

After all, the Oklahoma senator is not pursuing a top-down mandate on the shooting public to bend to the government’s will. Instead, she proposes to incentivize responsible actions and encourage behavior that enhances both public safety and that within the home.

This is a bill that deserves bipartisan and broad-based support from all Oklahomans. Dossett is to be applauded by Second Amendment advocates and firearm enthusiasts.
