In a self-defense situation, five-to-one odds are not good. Chances are strong that the “one” will get the worst of the encounter and may not live to tell the tale.
But the presence of a legal firearm can certainly turn the tide in such a frightening encounter, and that was the case recently in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Tulsa Police reported the Tuesday confrontation began when five assailants surrounded a homeowner in an escalation of an ongoing dispute. The attackers pulled up in two vehicles and attempted to overwhelm the intended victim.
One of the suspects was identified as 47-year-old Marco Richardson, and police believe he, his son and three others charged the intended victim in front of his home.
The homeowner was quickly trapped against a vehicle and apparently about to suffer a beatdown or worse. But he was able to draw his weapon and began firing, quickly ending the attack.
Two of the suspects were struck, including Richardson, who was hit by a bullet in the chest. His son was also hit by gunfire. Police officers responded to the chaos and found the elder Richardson on the ground with several people around him.
Both alleged attackers were transported to a local hospital, and Richardson later died from his injuries. The second suspect who was shot was listed in critical condition.
TPD reported that the homeowner stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators. He also turned over his weapon to police while they probed the incident.
The Facebook post added, “Based on witness statements and evidence collected, no charges were filed against the homeowner.”
The District Attorney’s office will make the final determination on how the case proceeds. And while the loss of life is regrettable, accounts of the incident point toward a clear-cut case of self-defense by an intended victim who was vastly outnumbered by his attackers.
