A man in Oklahoma found out the hard way Tuesday night that it is not a good idea to threaten a mother with four children in her home. She will do anything to protect her precious young ones, and in this case, the mother was armed.

Witnesses reported that 37-year-old John Adame, who was just released from prison a week before, attempted to break into several apartments.

One neighbor, Breeann Wetselline, told local media that she and her husband saw the suspect sleeping outside the apartment. She and others noted that they had never seen the man before and believed he was looking for shelter from the cold.

Wetselline said this type of violent incident is unusual for the area.

“It was scary because this apartment is usually quiet,” she noted. “We heard snoring, so we opened the door, and he was laying right there. So, we didn’t think nothing of it because we’ve had homeless people come sleep here before.”

The couple sympathetically did not call law enforcement, but the situation escalated quickly. Adame allegedly attempted to break through their door before moving on to another apartment, where he made a near-fatal mistake.

Oklahoma City Police investigators believe the suspect tried to enter the mother’s residence and yelled racial slurs through the door. The woman armed herself to defend her family and told Adame that she had a weapon.

OCPD M.Sgt. Gary Knight explained to reporters that the intended victim fired her gun when Adame continued to try to break into her apartment.

The suspect fled, and responding officers found him injured in a nearby building. Adame was transported to the hospital and underwent surgery for the bullet wound there.

It appears that the suspect’s freedom will be short-lived. He previously served time for grand larceny and will undoubtedly face numerous charges for this latest incident.

The mother can be thankful today that she was armed and ready to defend her family.
