Second Amendment advocates cried foul over Oregon lawmakers’ last-minute amending of a bill to fill it with anti-gun restrictions.

SB 243 originally sought to permit the Department of State Police to research the process for conducting criminal background checks and determine whether it could be streamlined.

The agency was to deliver recommendations next year.

But now, a wishlist of restrictions against gun rights is part of the measure. This includes SB 697, which would raise the minimum age for possessing semi-automatic weapons in Oregon to 21.

Provisions from SB 429, which would establish a mandatory 72-hour waiting period before a licensed firearm dealer can deliver a weapon after the criminal background check is initiated, have also been added.

Lawmakers voiced their opposition to the last-minute revisions, which are to be considered in a work session this week.

Sen. Daniel Bonham (R) blasted the heavily amended bill as running roughshod over constitutional rights.

“This is no way to govern. Dropping a massive gun control amendment at the last minute, without public scrutiny, is an insult to Oregonians,” Bonham charged. “On top of that, this bill punishes law-abiding citizens while ignoring the reality that most gun deaths in Oregon are suicides, not homicides. Instead of ineffective restrictions, we should be addressing the root causes—mental health and violent crime.”

One of Bonham’s colleagues strongly echoed his sentiments. Sen. David Brock Smith (R) called the bill yet another assault on rural citizens that ignores the real issues.”

Bonham explained, “Oregon’s mental health crisis is being ignored in favor of ineffective gun control policies that won’t stop criminals or reduce suicides.”

Anti-gunners are notorious for last-minute additions to bills that skirt public scrutiny and legislative debate. All Oregonians who value their Second Amendment rights must contact their elected representatives and make their voices heard.
