Convenience stores are frequent targets for robbers who perceive them as poorly defended and unlikely to resist a sudden confrontation. But this many times proves to be a severe miscalculation as more Americans arm themselves and choose to confront violent criminals instead of cowering in fear.

This was the case Sunday evening at the Duck N Go convenience store in Eugene, Oregon, where an alleged armed criminal received more than he bargained for.

Eugene Police reported that it was about 5 p.m. when the suspect entered the business and drew a weapon on the store owner. This robbery attempt backfired quickly as the employee had other ideas.

Instead of meekly following orders, the businessman drew his own weapon and fired one shot at the suspect. That was enough to alter the confrontation dramatically.

The alleged robber was struck and fell to the floor. Bystanders reported hearing the single gunshot and then the suspect screaming, “I don’t want to die!”

The police were called and arrived shortly after to find the wounded suspect no longer a threat. He was treated at the scene for undisclosed injuries that were described as non-life threatening.

There is no immediate word on charges against the store owner, though even in Oregon’s rabid gun control atmosphere, that seems highly unlikely. After all, he was allegedly confronted by an armed criminal threatening his life, and his response could be expected of anyone who had the presence of mind to be armed.

The Second Amendment artfully enshrined the right to armed self-defense for all law-abiding Americans, and there are an increasing number of examples of good people saying no to becoming just another statistic.

This is encouraging and should send a clear message to those who would otherwise prey on the innocent. Americans treasure the freedom to choose not to become a victim; attacking them is done at one’s own peril.
