A man and his wife in their 60s may be alive today thanks to having the good sense to be ready.
The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, couple were home around 11 p.m. Monday night when suddenly confronted by the unexpected.
Police Inspector Scott Small described how the situation unfolded. “The homeowners who were in the house at the time, they saw on their Ring camera that somebody was tampering with the front door.
The husband secured a firearm and went to the door to confront the suspect. At that time the alleged intruder succeeded in getting into the home, and that was his final mistake.
The man responded to the obvious threat by shooting the suspect in the chest. Small detailed the lethal encounter.
“After breaking into the doors and being confronted by the homeowner, that’s when the homeowner fired one shot, striking the 64-year-old who has just broken into the house and he collapsed right inside of the enclosed front porch,” Small reported. “That’s where police found him.”
Police arrived and the 64-year-old intruder was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Investigators determined that neither the husband nor wife knew the suspect.
Fresh damage was found on the exterior door and the Ring camera was ripped from the wall.
The obviously shaken couple cooperated with the authorities, and there was no word on potential charges. It is highly unlikely with the known facts that the husband will face legal consequences for what appears to be an obvious case of self-defense.
