An apparent bad choice proved fatal for an alleged attacker this week in South Carolina, and an armed citizen walked away unharmed.

According to the Hardeeville Police Department, at 9:38 p.m. on Monday, a “male subject” pointed a gun at a driver and ordered him to exit the vehicle.

What transpired afterward is unclear except that police arrived to find the suspect fatally wounded. Witnesses told investigators that they saw the suspect leaving the scene on foot.

Officers attempted to render life-saving aid, but their efforts proved futile.

The Hardeeville Police Department released a statement on the deadly encounter the following day. “Detectives with the Hardeeville Police Department continue to investigate this incident. Initial evidence and investigative information caused detectives to suspect the deceased subject in this case was actively involved in attempted armed assaults on potential victims when he encountered an armed citizen who protected himself.”

Authorities described the dead man as “a suspected multiple offender.”

Officials added that there was no further threat to the community.

There is little more frightening than an apparent carjacking attempt. Having a total stranger try to force you out of your vehicle is a dreadful situation, though Americans are increasingly prepared to fight back in such an encounter.

Record numbers of law-abiding citizens own weapons in 2025 and carry them for self-defense. These are good people who do not want to become victims of violent criminals and are taking steps to protect themselves, their families, and their property.

There is no celebrating the loss of life in South Carolina this week, but a terrible decision was apparently reached. When someone chooses to threaten another person at gunpoint, they have opened a Pandora’s Box of possible consequences that are now out of their control.

Some of which are fatal.
