The Second Amendment was established to ensure that the law-abiding citizenry could defend themselves and the nation if called upon. In countless incidents, many of which go unreported or underreported, good people use their legal firearms to stop bad people.

One of the most recent cases of armed self-defense unfolded last week in Scott City, Missouri.

This time, it wasn’t in the dead of night when the intended victim was asleep. Instead, this violent encounter exploded in the middle of the afternoon.

The unidentified homeowner was startled at around 2:45 p.m. to hear an unknown intruder kick in the back door to their residence. There is no word on the reason for the intrusion, though robbery appears to be a likely motive.

But a brazen theft was not the result of the home invasion. The homeowner was armed and prepared, and after warning the suspect to leave immediately, at least one shot was fired.

Officers attempted to render first aid, but the alleged intruder died at a hospital a short time later. Authorities identified the deceased as Jason L. Vermillion of Scott City.

Scott City Police Chief Chris Griggs described what investigators determined. “He said he was not leaving, and the altercation occurred and resulted in him being fatally wounded.”

Griggs explained that prosecutors do not intend to charge the homeowner. “Someone’s home was broken into and [they] had to use lethal force, but [were] justified in doing so. Your home is your domain, it’s your property, you do whatever force you feel is necessary to stop the threat.”

Missouri is one of several states that recognizes the rights established by the Second Amendment and the right to stand your ground against an attacker. The death of the suspect is unfortunate, but the homeowner was left with no choice but to use lethal force to defend himself.
