In this age of home deliveries for everything from lawnmowers to lipstick, it is hardly surprising that there are violent criminals who prey on these hard-working citizens. In the latest robbery attempt, this time in Houston, Texas, the perpetrator targeted a more traditional occupation.

A pizza delivery driver.

It was early Sunday morning, approximately 12:25 a.m., when an apparent robbery went sideways for the alleged perpetrator. The driver was confronted without warning and is fortunate that he was armed and prepared to defend himself.

Houston PD Homicide Division Sergeant M. Holbrook and Detective R. Lujan reported the driver was attempting to make a delivery when danger struck. He was surprised by a male suspect who reportedly produced a weapon and demanded that the worker hand over his cash.

Faced with a deadly threat, the driver had other ideas. He was able to pull a handgun of his own and fired in self-defense, leading to the death of his alleged assailant.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect. But the deceased individual’s brother Ameer White, identified him to KHOU as 21-year-old Areyeh White.

The surviving brother questioned the police account of the shooting. “They say he was a pizza delivery guy, but we don’t have a receipt that he was buying a pizza. If you were the pizza delivery guy, why did you have a, why were you armed?”

There is an obvious answer to that question.

A second suspect who was described as wearing a white hoodie ran from the scene with the pizza driver’s backpack. The delivery driver was not harmed in the frightening incident.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is expected to present evidence in the case to a grand jury. This body will decide whether the driver acted in a legal manner in defending himself.

Of all the places such a violent encounter could occur, there is not a better state than Texas for the driver to have defended himself. That is due to the Lone Star State granting wide leeway to law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their property against the threat of deadly force.
