Americans know the Bill of Rights protects their fundamental liberty to defend their families and property, and the public fully understands that the Second Amendment is hardly a second-class freedom.
That same understanding is often lacking in the judiciary, and judges must be reminded that the Constitution is not negotiable.
A recent poll strongly reinforced this truth for all to see.
The new McGlothlin & Associates survey revealed that the U.S. public favors judges who adhere to the Constitution and defend the right to keep and bear arms.
The study was commissioned by the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and conducted earlier in December. It showed that, besides scorn heaped on jurists who disfavor gun rights, Americans believe the incoming administration and reformed Congress will better protect the Second Amendment.
The survey asked respondents, “How important is it to you to get judges confirmed and nominated to the federal courts who make it a priority to try their best to strictly follow the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution?”
Almost 76% of Americans answered that having these judges on the bench is very or somewhat important. By comparison, only 15% of respondents believe such qualifications are unimportant.
Jim McLaughlin is the polling firm’s CEO. He declared that the results powerfully conveyed voters’ concerns about upholding gun rights.
“Overwhelming majorities of voters want their political leaders in Washington to defend the Second Amendment (77%),” McLaughlin said. “Furthermore, three out of four voters (76%) say it is important to nominate and confirm judges to the federal courts who will make it a priority to strictly follow the Second Amendment.”
With significant political changes coming, it is critical that those sent to Washington know the will of the people. And the people, by a large margin, want their gun rights protected by their leaders.
