There are patently foolish ideas, and then there are those currently pushed by so-called leaders in Sacramento. The California city is battling a spike in violent crime, and these politicians are scrambling to appear to be doing “something.”
Apparently, it does not matter what that something is.
The city is barreling ahead with a series of proposals that will not increase the safety of its law-abiding citizens one iota. Instead, they will only penalize lawful gun owners in a patently unconstitutional manner.
Far from contentious, at least among councilmembers, the proposals recently emerged unanimously from the Law and Legislative Committee. They target good citizens with a wide variety of penalties for gun owners.
For example, gun owners would be charged a ludicrous $25 annual “harm reduction” fee for every weapon owned. Never mind that such a tax would never be considered on any other freedom enshrined in the Bill of Rights and that sportsmen and collectors will face a burdensome punishment for exercising their rights.
Then there’s the proposal to require all lawful gun owners to maintain liability insurance to protect against accidents. Again, only the good people will be subjected to this punitive measure — no gang members will be lined up to purchase their insurance policies.
There’s also a silly proposal to prohibit minors from entering a gun store. These same minors are barred from purchasing weapons by federal law, but somehow, not permitting them to even walk into the sporting goods store will lower the crime rate.
Hypocritical leaders did not stop there.
Home-based firearm businesses would be put out of commission under the new proposals. These federally-regulated dealers are mandated to jump through the same hoops as their gun shop brethren, but that matters not to the crusading Sacramento leadership.
With their almost certain passage, these potential laws are ripe for challenge from Second Amendment advocates.
They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
Well, the Pew Collectors Anonymous is your way of admitting you have a problem buying guns but you have no intentions of solving that problem, because Pew Collectors Anonymous isn’t about solving a problem; it’s about embracing it.
