An alleged attempted robbery magically transformed into a double defensive shooting in west San Antonio late last month when the 34-year-old intended victim turned the tables on his assailants.

The recently reported drama unfolded in the wee hours of a Sunday morning when a pair of armed suspects made the mistake of approaching an armed man just before 4 a.m. Their intent was apparently to rob him, but he flipped the script on his unfortunate attackers.

The San Antonio Police Department believes the man responded to being confronted by quickly drawing his own weapon and firing at the suspects.

He struck both.

The target’s shots hit one of the assailants in the head and struck the hip of the other. The more seriously wounded was only identified as a 23-year-old male, and at last report a local hospital listed him in critical condition.

The second suspect was also transported to the hospital and treated before being interrogated by SAPD investigators. His statements and eyewitness accounts confirmed his role in the apparent attempted robbery.

The exact charges against the two suspects are unclear, but they will surely be numerous. Unfortunately for the Ranch Valley Drive neighborhood, neighbors say such incidents are becoming more frequent by the day.

KENS 5 spoke to one resident who said the defensive shooting “scared” them. “It’s gotten to a point where we feel like we need to look out the door before we walk outside at nighttime.”

Another noted that it is far from uncommon for criminals to disrupt neighborhood life. “We’re trying to live our life and they come over here and block the road, block the street.”

As the intended victim quickly learned, there is no substitute for preparedness, and preparation should, in most cases, include being lawfully armed. Even with the likely increased patrols of the area, police resources are limited.

The people continue to choose to be their own first responders rather than helpless victims.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
