Hardworking delivery drivers are all too often deemed “soft targets” by violent criminals who would prey on them as they do their jobs. In one recent Seattle instance, that presumption proved to be anything but accurate.
It was early Saturday morning just before 5:00 a.m. in a Seattle apartment complex when a driver encountered the unexpected. A suspect surprised him and attempted to drive off in his delivery van.
According to media reports, the driver returned to his van after dropping off a delivery, only to discover that a man was inside and about to drive away. The sudden encounter went from bad to worse when the van struck the driver as the suspect attempted to flee.
The victim was armed and fired multiple shots at his early morning attacker. Responding officers located the van a few blocks away riddled with bullet holes.
The wounded suspect was still inside.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was quickly transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The delivery driver also reportedly received minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
There was no immediate word on which delivery company the driver worked for, so there is also no way to know if his employer permitted him to be armed. However, the fact that he was making a delivery to an apartment complex at such an hour is enough to justify carrying a firearm.
Far too often, workers are targeted by the criminal element in what is hoped will be an easy score. The suspect almost certainly did not expect armed resistance, but that is what he brought onto himself.
As these encounters become even more common, do not be surprised when the intended victims turn out to be anything but. The Second Amendment allows law-abiding citizens to protect themselves from harm, and an increasing number do exactly that.
