Even as a flurry of activity swirled around the new Donald Trump administration, Second Amendment advocates wondered when the steady erosion of gun rights would be addressed.
The wait is over.
On Friday, Trump issued a new executive order mandating that newly minted Attorney General Pam Bondi sift through controversial anti-gun initiatives enacted in the past four years for violations of the Constitution.
The EO states, “Within 30 days of this order, the Attorney General shall examine all orders, regulations, guidance, plans, international agreements, and other actions of executive departments and agencies to assess any ongoing infringements of the Second Amendment rights of our citizens, and present a proposed plan of action to the President, through the Domestic Policy Advisor, to protect the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.”
The White House released a powerful statement in the EO, declaring that the Second Amendment “has preserved the right of the American people to protect ourselves, our families, and our freedoms since the founding of our great Nation.”
Not all is good news, as there is some consternation among gun rights supporters over Bondi’s previous backing of so-called “red flag” laws and other controversial policies.
Still, powerful advocates like the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) quickly celebrated the decision.
Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President for Government and Public Affairs and General Counsel, lauded the move. He noted the “swift and thorough actions to protect not just Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans but also the industry that provides the means to exercise that sacred right.”
Keane delivered harsh words for the former White House occupant.
“For the past four years, the previous president and his administration attacked law-abiding gun owners and the lawful firearm industry at every opportunity, crippling small businesses and turning law-abiding Americans into criminals overnight, all while trampling on Constitutional rights and ignoring laws passed by Congress.”
The National Rifle Association (NRA) added its applause to the potent EO from the White House.
John Commerford is the Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA).
His statement declared, “After a long four years, law-abiding gun owners no longer have to worry about being the target of an anti-gun radical administration. NRA looks forward to the advances and restoration of our rights that will come from President Trump’s respect for the Constitution.”
Gun rights opponents predictably recoiled in horror at the support for the Bill of Rights.
The Brady PAC posted, “Didn’t Trump just promise the president of Mexico that he would clamp down on gun trafficking?”
And Giffords charged that the EO was issued on Friday because the new president knew it would be “incredibly unpopular.”
This is despite poll after poll demonstrating that Americans are not interested in radical restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms and that they support the fundamental freedom of armed self-defense.
Of particular interest for Second Amendment advocates are new rules enacted by the embattled Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which dramatically suppressed gun rights.
The agency attacked federally licensed firearm dealers with an egregious zero-tolerance policy that put many out of business. The ATF moved toward an outright ban on hobby gun production by prohibiting firearm parts that do not have serial numbers.
A review is also ordered of the much maligned and now shuttered White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Officials must sift through reports and papers left behind by the office to find potential violations of gun rights.
This EO and the review of potential transgressions against constitutionally guaranteed freedoms are essential and long overdue. This welcome change should result in renewed respect for the right to keep and bear arms.
