Regardless of how clear the need for self-defense appeared at the time of the incident, there is always a period of uncertainty when the intended victim must wait to learn if they will face charges for protecting themselves and their loved ones.

Good news came for a South Carolina resident last week when they learned that they are not in legal hot water after fatally shooting an alleged intruder.

On Monday, the Longs homeowner faced the frightening scenario of an individual attempting to break into their home. According to Horry County investigators, 34-year-old Ryan Surujnauth of North Myrtle Beach tried to gain entry to the residence at around 7:30 p.m. but was confronted by the homeowner.

A struggle ensued, and the homeowner was able to shoot Surujnauth several times.

Authorities were called, and when they arrived, they found the suspect unconscious and bleeding inside the home. He was quickly transported to Grand Strand Medical Center for treatment but succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Jimmy Richardson is Horry County’s chief prosecutor. He explained that the investigation determined that the homeowner acted in self-defense and a justified manner. “This guy did exactly what we all would have done. There’s not going to be any charges in that case.”

The homeowner’s identity has not been released.

Even in the most obvious case of self-defense, a prosecutor’s decision remains on whether the good citizen acted lawfully. It is undoubtedly a nervous time as the individual waits to learn if they have plunged into a legal morass simply by exercising their Second Amendment rights.

In this instance, the good guy received good news and is free to move forward.

It is also a warning for anyone considering violently breaking into another person’s home that they are usually well within their rights to use lethal force to defend themself.
