Not everything came up rosy for Second Amendment advocates on Election Day as Colorado voters approved an excise tax on firearm and ammunition sales.

The electorate made the state only the second, following California, to penalize law-abiding citizens for exercising their constitutional rights. The 6.5% state-level tax funds will assist victims of violent crimes.

A noble cause, to be sure, but the connection between lawful gun sales and this outcome is anybody’s guess. Anti-gun forces are forever attempting to link the right to keep and bear arms with criminals breaking the law and targeting the defenseless.

Proposition KK passed on a day that otherwise saw rabid gun control candidates go down in flames, including for the highest office in the land.

It was the only significant gun referendum on a statewide ballot across the nation.

And it marked another rung in Colorado’s continuing movement from a state that honored its sporting traditions to that of a California acolyte. From the Governor’s Mansion on down, political leaders race to mimic anti-Second Amendment measures adopted by the Golden State, and defenders of the Bill of Rights have no choice but to continue fighting the shift.

How much will the new excise tax take from gun owners?

The new and additional tax on a $500 weapon will be $33, increasing to $65 on a $100 rifle. Purchasing $20 worth of ammunition will cost an additional $1.30.

Most funds will be earmarked for Colorado’s Crime Victim Services Fund. The program relies heavily on federal tax dollars, which have essentially dried up in recent years.

Now, gun control advocates turn to a punitive tax on gun owners in a feeble attempt to place guilt on them for the actions of criminals. This is a controversial act begging for a legal response.
