Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last week that the social media giant would end blatant censorship of user content. This surprising reversal was met with general enthusiasm, but questions remain.
Meta controls Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. It also features a long history of suppression of Second Amendment-friendly pages that draws frequent criticism from the shooting public.
For example, Meta bans users who are not brick-and-mortar businesses or federally licensed firearm dealers from creating posts attempting to “buy, sell, or trade firearms, firearm parts, explosives, or lethal enhancements.”
It permits safety and training materials.
Traditional firearm manufacturer Smith & Wesson found itself in social media limbo last year when its Facebook page was indefinitely suspended. The reason given was a violation of Meta’s weapons policy.
The removal was rescinded after a loud outcry from gun enthusiasts and Second Amendment advocates.
The company claimed the erasure of Smith & Wesson was an error.
There are also numerous accounts of reputable individuals being “shadow banned” for gun-related posts. Anti-gunners such as Everytown for Gun Safety actively lobby social media platforms to censor posts that reference firearms.
In October, the organization demanded that Meta lower its standards for suspending accounts that it considered in violation of company policy.
Although Meta’s sweeping announcement last week did not explicitly mention these accounts, its new commitment to free speech may have positive effects.
The company signaled it will abandon automated systems that flag questionable content and rely more heavily on user reporting, like the system now employed by X, formerly Twitter.
An enhanced appeals process is also in the works, allowing users targeted for banning to state their case and possibly reverse Meta’s actions.
The result should be a system that treats posts related to the Second Amendment more fairly and has a standard process for disputing questionable targeting.
