Good news has arrived for a South Carolina convenience store clerk who faced a terrifying situation three days after Christmas. The man had a pistol put up to his head but lived to see the New Year, and he will not face charges for his defensive actions.

According to the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, an armed robber burst into the Mini Mart and Tobacco Store just before 9 p.m. The startled worker behind the counter quickly found a handgun pressed to his head and faced demands for money.

He was being robbed and very well could have lost his life, but the free exercise of his Second Amendment rights saved the day.

The clerk somehow produced his own weapon and opened fire. The alleged robber was struck and went down, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement quickly descended on the location, and officials watched security video footage that backed up the clerk’s account of the deadly confrontation.

The sheriff’s department posted a Facebook warning to the criminal community that South Carolina law entirely supports law-abiding citizens’ self-defense rights.

The statute reads, “A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in another place where he has a right to be, including his place of business, has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily injury to himself or another person or to prevent the commission of a violent crime.”

That’s about as simple and straightforward as it gets.

After citing relevant state law, the sheriff’s department added that following the investigation and consultation with the 4th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, the clerk will not face charges.
