The times are definitely a-changin’ in Washington, D.C., and there are yet more positive signs for Second Amendment advocates alarmed by attacks on gun rights in recent years.

This week, former Secret Service agent and diehard gun rights supporter Dan Bongino was named the new Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Bongino is a popular commentator but will put this aside to assume the new position. The announcement followed last week’s Senate confirmation of Kash Patel as the FBI Director.

Both agency leaders appear focused on crime fighting, and both are outspoken about the need to protect the right to keep and bear arms.

Bongino once referred to the Second Amendment as a “fail-safe woven into the fabric of our Constitution,” a sure indication that he recognizes the importance of gun rights for the Republic. As a commentator, he argued that gun control is usually implemented to control the public instead of a move to combat crime realistically.

Gun rights advocates grew tired of repeated attacks on these freedoms over the past few years. Bongino, who also served in the NYPD along with his time as a Secret Service agent, is well known for shining the spotlight on government overreach.

This includes rogue actions by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) that targeted law-abiding gun owners rather than violent criminals.

The days of the ATF running traditional mom-and-pop gun shop owners out of business for minor paperwork errors are likely over. There is a seismic shift within the Department of Justice toward returning to fighting crime and away from such controversial and politically charged actions.

While the push to abolish the ATF outright will be difficult, having it and the FBI regain a healthy respect for Second Amendment rights would be a welcome change.
