Being a store clerk is a dangerous profession, so it is quite understandable that many people who are in this line of work choose to be ready to defend themselves with lethal force.

One such employee in a Washington state business is lucky today to have fully exercised his Second Amendment rights.

According to investigators, an Othello establishment was the site of a violent encounter Saturday afternoon that left an individual hospitalized and facing a heap of legal trouble.

Authorities believe 22-year-old Omar Negrete-Galvan entered the business and started fighting with the unidentified store clerk. The suspect brandished a weapon, and the embattled employee produced one of his own.

As the clerk attempted to defend himself, he fired at least one shot that struck Negrete-Galvan in the leg. The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening injury, and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office reported there was probable cause to arrest him for attempted assault and other alleged criminal acts.

Negrete-Galvan was taken into custody after being treated for his leg wound. It is unclear exactly what started the physical confrontation, but it is telling that no potential charges against the clerk were announced by the sheriff’s department.

Law enforcement officials reported that the violent encounter is still under investigation.

Again, store clerks are often in a precarious position, especially in certain crime-ridden areas. As they attempt to make an honest living, all too often, these employees are targeted by bad guys looking for an easy score.

The Second Amendment, despite pushback from states dominated by misguided gun control zealots, exists primarily to guarantee that law-abiding citizens can defend themselves from evildoers.

This most recent case is yet another shining example of the importance of the right to keep and bear arms. The store employee is undoubtedly thankful today that he was armed and ready.
