The much-ridiculed Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) warning that guns somehow are a “public health crisis” is no more.
Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a 40-page advisory during the heat of last year’s presidential election, claiming that the Second Amendment threatened the wellbeing of the nation.
Murthy declared in a video announcement, “Today, for the first time in the history of our office, I am issuing a Surgeon General’s Advisory on firearm violence. It outlines the urgent threat firearm violence poses to the health and well-being of our country.”
Of course, there was no mistaking the timing of the official act, which coincided with the summer of 2024’s frantic campaigning. Likely, there was the expectation by the White House that this move would rally support from the anti-gun base.
That move backfired.
On Tuesday, the link to the Surgeon General’s missive simply read, “Page Not Found.”
Thus ends the latest chapter in the utilization of the federal government to fight the very freedoms it is in place to uphold. There were no such breathless announcements about the First Amendment or any other fundamental U.S. liberty, only the right to keep and bear arms.
HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon emailed an explanation to CNN last week notifying the network that the agency is in compliance with the White House initiative on gun freedoms.
He wrote, “HHS and the Office of the Surgeon General are complying with President Trump’s Executive Order on protecting Second Amendment rights.”
One of the fatal flaws of Murthy’s proclamation was the utter reliance on discredited data from the anti-Second Amendment Gun Violence Archive (GVA).
The gun control database was constantly cited by the previous administration when it wanted to inflate statistics to support its well-established agenda to suppress such freedoms.
The group is well known for inflating mass shooting data to make it appear that the nation is rife with these murders. Now, the obviously biased Surgeon General’s report is no more, and that came not a moment too soon.
