Heroes generally do not know they are about to achieve that status before it comes upon them. Therefore, being a person who saves lives usually requires preparedness and a healthy dose of courage.
An unidentified Good Samaritan is credited with stopping an alleged would-be mass shooter in their tracks Monday afternoon in Crozet, Virginia.
The shocking incident quickly developed at about 1:35 p.m. in the Augusta Health Clinic and Harris Teeter grocery store parking lot. Investigators believe the suspect began shooting with a rifle that was later recovered at the scene.
The attacker likely did not count on an armed good guy stepping up to stop them, but that’s what they faced.
The defender fired at least one shot at the alleged assailant, ending the horrific attack. The suspected shooter was pronounced dead at the scene, while the hero was unhurt.
The Albemarle County Police Department reported that another person was shot and killed by the suspect, and investigators are working to determine if there was a relationship between the two.
No one inside the medical facility or grocery store was injured in the attack.
The clinic released a statement after the disturbing incident. “Augusta Health is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved; thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragic event.”
Local media reported that the alleged assailant’s rifle and another weapon were found by law enforcement.
There is no doubt that a hero emerged in North Carolina on Monday. The person who raced to rescue strangers would not have been in the position to intervene had they not had a weapon, and they very well may have become another victim.
Lives were almost certainly saved by the presence of a good guy with a gun yet again.
