Stockings are still being hung by the chimney with care, but already, a deluge of Second Amendment-related measures is flooding the Texas legislature for the 2025 Regular Session. As the Lone Star State is at the forefront of defending gun rights, these proposals will be closely watched as they meander through the political process.

It took only three days of the pre-filing period to see over 75 of these measures submitted. And most are opposed to gun rights.

For example, there are new proposals for expanded “red flag” firearm confiscations that are generally based upon little more than one person’s word against another. Critics charge that due process is thrown to the wayside for the accused.

Texas anti-gunners proposed that private firearm transfers be prohibited, which is a clear sign of just how far this political bloc is willing to infringe on civil liberties. And there are more.

Suppose these “leaders” get their way. In that case, law-abiding Texas residents will be burdened by restrictions on magazine capacity, face an outright prohibition of the most popular sporting rifles in the U.S. and repeal of freedoms they currently enjoy.

On the chopping block are the rights to open carry and campus carry. There is even a measure to end Texas’ preemption law, which protects the good people from being subjected to the gun control whims of local “leaders.”

Preemption is the only thing standing in the way of anti-gun bastions such as Austin virtually eradicating the right to keep and bear arms. Courts have consistently upheld the authority of states to supersede local gun control laws and prevent an unworkable patchwork quilt of prohibitions.

However, not all is doom and gloom for Second Amendment rights in Texas. As the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) noted, several measures favor the people’s constitutional rights.

For example, House Bill 162 prohibits state or local authorities from enforcing “red flag” confiscation orders or enacting laws and procedures to implement such orders. This would go far in protecting individual rights against baseless allegations.

House Bill 644 protects business owners who allow licensed concealed carry in their shops.

Even as states such as California and Colorado move to tax gun owners punitively, House Bill 920 would exempt weapons, ammunition and accessories from the Texas sales and use tax.

National reciprocity for carry licenses is on the table with the new administration entering the White House in January. Texas lawmakers want to get a step ahead with House Bill 1337.

This would mean the Lone Star State recognizes out-of-state carry licenses and applies permitless carry to non-residents.

And House Bill 1403 counters the alarming trend of federal and state agencies demanding a listing of firearms present in the home for a variety of indefensible reasons. This measure would prevent state agencies and child placement services from requiring a detailed account of all weapons present in a residence.

Further, it would ensure that knowledge of firearms in a home is strictly confidential.

Legislators convene on January 14, and the deadline for introducing bills is March 14. Despite there being over three months left to submit proposals, Texas is already bombarded with gun-related measures.

And it is a list that will surely grow.

The second-largest state is a trustworthy vanguard of Second Amendment rights, but that does not mean that there should be any less attention paid to measures intended to strip away your freedoms. Anti-gun forces do not sleep, and they will not be content until the freedom to keep and bear arms is but a distant memory.
