Anti-Second Amendment lawmakers who target detachable magazines are going after the most overwhelmingly common variety. That’s the result of a report from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the weapons industry trade association.

The Detachable Magazine Report revealed that there are over 963 million of these popular devices that have been manufactured and in circulation in the U.S. Nearly a billion.

Magazines of course come with different capacities, and gun control advocates label those which hold more than 10 rounds as “high-capacity.”

But the NSSF report clearly demonstrated that despite this erroneous classification, these magazines are the industry standard. In fact, there are at least 717 million which have a capacity greater than 10 rounds in the hands of the American public.

The organization further noted that fully 46% of the rifle magazines in circulation have at least a 30-round capacity. And the total of pistol magazines with a capacity of at least 11 rounds stands at roughly 55%.

Far from being an outlier, these are the most common attachments in modern firearm usage.

Sporting rifles as well as semi-automatic handguns depend on these features. They are deployed for everything from hunting to self-defense and target shooting and are unquestionably included in the “arms” referenced in the Bill of Rights.

NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane noted that anti-gun rhetoric about these so-called “high-capacity” magazines missed the mark. “The data establishes that law-abiding gun owners overwhelmingly choose magazines that have a capacity to hold more than 10 rounds for lawful purposes.”

And ambitious regulators will have their hands full outlawing nearly three-quarters of a billion magazines. Add that total to the NSSF estimate of 28,144,000 so-called “assault rifles,” and their work is even more clearly cut out for them.
