Despite the steady anti-Second Amendment drumbeat from those opposed to gun rights, the American public is solidly behind the right to keep and bear arms.
More specifically, a vast majority broadly agrees that the U.S. Supreme Court was correct when it reaffirmed the right to carry a firearm for self-defense outside the home.
Marquette University Law School regularly conducts polls of U.S. sentiment on fundamental legal issues, and it just released its latest findings. The study, conducted at the end of July, questioned 1,005 adults.
Among many queries on American institutions in general and the high court in particular was the following: “In 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that subject to some restrictions, the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home. How much do you favor or oppose this decision?”
The results were overwhelmingly in favor of the monumental Bruen decision.
Forty percent of respondents declared they “strongly favor” the high court’s ruling, while another 29% said they “somewhat favor” the decision. In other words, a solid 69% of the population backed the justices in the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen case.
That marked a 5% increase in support from the last Marquette poll which asked the same question.
Only 14% “strongly” opposed.
It is also noteworthy that Bruen received the second-highest favorable response of the ten Supreme Court decisions that were polled. The most support went to another Second Amendment case, which reaffirmed the legality of denying gun rights to persons subject to a domestic violence restraining order.
The vital takeaway is that the public, by a wide margin, supports the right to keep and bear arms to law-abiding citizens. It draws the line at those who would cause harm to others, particularly the defenseless.
This is perfectly aligned with positions held by virtually every Second Amendment supporter.
