The American appetite for enjoying Second Amendment freedoms is hardly diminishing despite the best efforts of the anti-gunners and the naysayers.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reported that the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System (NICS) logged an adjusted 1,382,287 firearm checks last month, a robust 8.1% increase from June 2021 and the second-highest total for the first month of summer on record.

Only in June 2020, in the middle of widespread social unrest in the U.S., was last month’s figure surpassed.

This marked the 59th consecutive month of over a million weapons sales in the U.S., and prices for firearms are reaching historic lows. This means that there are likely even more transactions coming in the near future.

If July surpasses the 1 million mark, and there’s no reason to believe it will not, it will mean that this level of sales has endured for five full years.

Though 2024’s second quarter registered an 8.9% decrease from the same period in 2021, it still marked the third-highest second-quarter figure on record.

It must be noted that the NICS figure represents the number of background checks conducted and not the actual total of firearm sales or the dollar amount of the transactions. Half of U.S. states allow for a qualified alternative permit to acquire a firearm, meaning that the permit holder does not have to submit to another background check if one has already been conducted.

Regardless of bookkeeping methods, the raw numbers convincingly demonstrate that Americans are serious about self-defense and that the fine tradition of sport shooting is alive and well.

Far too many states are attempting to suppress the right to keep and bear arms, but law-abiding citizens continue to exercise their freedoms. This should send a strong message both to Washington and state leaders that the people will not have their liberties infringed upon.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
