Last year proved to be another banner year for U.S. gun sales, with more than 15.2 million National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks conducted.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) tallied the impressive number by accumulating the total of FBI background checks and then paring the numbers down to actual gun sales.

Last year’s tally demonstrated yet again that the desire to keep and bear arms is alive and well. And December’s sales figures extended another impressive streak.

Even as shoppers filled stores looking for holiday bargains to wrap for the season, over one million NICS checks were conducted.

That marked the 65th consecutive month of over one million checks carried out by licensed retailers.

NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi lauded his group’s work in establishing the public’s appetite for exercising Second Amendment-guaranteed freedoms.

“We are proud that NSSF member companies continue to serve the American public that chooses to exercise their Second Amendment rights by the millions each month,” Bartozzi declared. “These background check figures show strong sales and that today’s firearm manufacturers are delivering high-quality products.”

It should be noted that 24 states allow a qualified alternative permit. This enables the purchaser who has already undergone a background check to get the permit to avoid having an additional criminal background check.

In other words, the total number of gun sales is even more impressive.

While it is impossible to quantify the exact number of retail transactions through licensed dealers, the snapshot provided by the NSSF is an excellent barometer of current firearm sales.

It also demonstrates that all the best efforts of anti-gunners have not turned Americans against the Second Amendment. The public knows well that the right to armed self-defense is part of the national fabric, and this right deserves to be protected.
